Life Cycle

Annual.

Propagation

Reproducing only by seed.

Stems

Stems erect, often much-branched with opposite branches (usually 2 per node), 20-70cm high, usually covered with coarse spreading hair (Figure 3).

Leaves

Leaves opposite (2 per node), the lower leaves have long stalks while the upper leaves are nearly stalkless. Leaf blades are oval, pointed towards the tip and coarsely toothed (Figure 1).

Flowers and Fruit

Flower heads are small, about 3-7mm across on short to long hairy stalks from axils of leaves (Figure 5). The ray florets are white, small with about 5 per head and only slightly longer than the yellowish-green to whitish disk florets (Figure 5). There are pappus-scales present on both the ray and tubular florets that are as long as the corolla tubes of the ray florets. Flowers from June to late autumn.

Habitat

Hairy galinsoga is common throughout southern Ontario in gardens, roadsides and waste places, especially near towns and cities.

Distinguishing Features

It is distinguished by its opposite, oval and coarsely toothed leaves on opposite-branched stems and its small flower heads each with 5 white tiny rays and a yellow disk.
